ANDREW BEALS – saxophone, flute, clarinet: Andrew beals received his
Bachelor of Arts in Music at Livingston College, Rutgers, University in
1984; His Masters of Arts in Music from NYU School of Education. His
teachers include Paul Jeffery, John Stubbelfield, Frank Foster, George
Garzone (saxophone) and Jim McNeely (composition). In 1986, he joined
Jazz Organist, “Brother” Jack McDuff and the “Heatin’ System” in 1986.
Beals became the latest in a long line of jazz Saxophone greats,
including: Sonny Stitt, Gene Ammons, Red Holloway, Joe Henderson, Joe
Lovano, Harold Vick, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk, to work with Jack McDuff.
Andrew was also the contributing arranger and featured soloist on Jack
McDuff’s last six Concord CD releases. In 1991 he was a semi-finalist at
the International Thelonius Monk Saxophone Competition. He has appeared
as a leader of his own band and as a featured soloist with Jack McDuff,
and others, at many renowned jazz clubs and festivals. He was awarded
the NYU Concert Jazz Ensemble Scholarship. He teaches privately
specializing in jazz improvisation. He is a saxophone, flute and
clarinet teacher at the Greenwich Music School. He is an Adjunct
Professor of Jazz Saxophone and Jazz Improvisation at Western
Connecticut State University. He has played with the Lionel Hampton
Orchestra, the Melvin Sparks Blues Band, legendary jazz drummer Mickey
Roker and with the Neal Smith Quartet and Sextet featuring Cyrus
Chestnut. RYAN
BERG - bass violin & electric bass: Born and raised near
Minneapolis, MN, Ryan has been playing music since the age of 5 years
old. During high school, he studied with jazz great, Anthony Cox, and
with James Clute, the former principle bassist of the Minnesota
Orchestra. He moved to New York in 1999 to attend Purchase College. He
studied with Todd Coolman, Pete Malinverni, John Faddis and Hal Galper.
He graduated from Purchase in 2002 winning the prestigious Anthony
Newman award. He performs throughout the Northeast with musicians such
as Ralph Lalama, Andrew Beals, Tony Jefferson, John Riley, James
Weidman, Hiroshi Yamazaki, Vijay Ier, Jon Faddis, Jon Maione, Matt
Shulman, Glenda Davenport, Jason Wildman, Peter Malinverni, Joe Lovano,
Slide Hampton, John Scofield, David Berkman, and as a leader with many
of his own groups He has taught many private lessons and worked as a
jazz counselor at the Purchase Summer Jazz Workshop and has taught
lessons, classes, and ensembles for the Day Jams music camp.
SHANNON BOYCE – voice, piano: Soprano, has a Master of Voice from
the Manhattan School of Music and a Bachelor of Music in Voice from
Samford University, Birmingham, Alabama. In the summer 2003, Mrs. Boyce
was an apprentice with the Des Moines Metro Opera. OperaNews online
March 2002 said “Boyce (Alida Slade) gave trilling voice and
impressively mature acting to her role.” As the 2002 winner of the
Manhattan School of Music Eisenberg-Fried Concerto Competition, she
performed Haydn’s Scene di Berenice with the Manhattan School of Music
Symphony conducted by Julius Rudel. Others credits include Guilietta in
the The Tales of Hoffman, Mrs. Mullins in Carousel, Ado Annie in
Oklahoma, and the W-itch in Into the Woods at the Brevard Music Center;
soloist in the Mozart Requiem with the Riverside Symphonia, and
performances with Dicapo Opera as part of their young artist program.
JOHN A. CARLSON – trumpet, trombone:
Soloist, composer and clinician, John received his Bachelor of Music
degree in Performance from Lawrence University, Wisconsin and has
achieved national recognition through tours and recordings Elther/Orchestra,
and the Ken Shophorst Ensemble, and continues to play with the Charlie
Kohlhase Quintet, the Machito Orchestra, the Dave Berkman Quartet, and
Rob Reddy’s Sleeping Dogs. John has been on over ten national tours as
well as in Canada (including the Western, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto
Jazz Festivals) Europe including the North Sea Jazz Festival, Portugal
and Pori Jazz Festival) and Japan in the Kyoto Jazz Festival. He has
been a featured soloist on over thirty albums and CD’s. He has performed
and/or recorded with Tito Puente, Chocolate Armeteros, Cab Calloway
Joanne Brackeen, Roswell Rudd, to name a few.
CHRISTINE CHU - cellist: Originally from Berkeley, CA, Christine
received a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Arts (American Cultures)
from the University of Michigan, and a Master of Music from Manhattan
School of Music. She has just finished her Artist Diploma at SUNY,
Purchase. Christine’s mentors include Julia Lichten, Peter Wiley, David
Geber, and Erling Blondal Bengtsson. She has played with the New World
Symphony, National Repertory Orchestra, National Orchestral Institute,
Aspen Festival Orchestra, and is currently a member of the Haddonfield
Symphony. Christine is active as a chamber and orchestral musician in
the tri-state area. In addition to performing, she maintains a private
cello and piano teaching studio. Her teaching experience includes Early
Childhood Outreach Program, Breckenridge Summer Music Day Camp, Harms
Elementary School, University of Michigan Children’s Center, Michigan
Youth Orchestra Sectionals, private lessons (cello and piano); and music
therapy with Alzheimer’s patients. Festivals include Tanglewood Music
Festival, 2004; National Orchestral Institute, 2003; National Repertory
Orchestra, 2002; Winter Institute for String Quartets, 1998; Aspen Music
Festival, 1993, 1994, 1997.
GLENDA J. DAVENPORT
- voice: Glenda is a graduate of the State
University of New York, Purchase College, with a Bachelor of Arts degree
in Psychology. Her employment career includes 19 years with IBM in human
resources in staff and management. She was the Associate Director of
Development at the American Red Cross. Glenda is also a professional
jazz singer performing regularly throughout the tri-state area. She was
a winner at The World Famous Apollo Theater’s Amateur Night, in April,
1993 and the opening act for comedian Bill Cosby at the Performing Arts
Center, Purchase College, April, 1994. She performed at the Saratoga
Jazz Festival with the Carmen Leggio Quartet, in July 1995. She is the
executive producer of her debut CD, “Sophisticated Lady.” Glenda is also
the Director of Administration at the Briarcliff Music School.
JASON DEVLIN - drums: Jason received his Bachelor of Music from
Manhattan School of Music. He has been a drum instructor for over ten
years. He plays regularly with many jazz blues and rock musicians in
both Westchester and New York City. He has performed with members of the
Gene Krupa, Maynard Ferguson and Buddy Rich bands. Jason’s effectiveness
as a teacher is reflected in his many successful “All County Band”
students. He is currently working with saxophone greats Carmen Leggio
and Jerry Dodgion. His debut album “It Was a Very Good Year”, with
guitarist John Basile has recently been released.
ALAN EICHER – piano composer: Alan
attended Berklee College of Music on Scholarship studying jazz
composition and piano performance. His education includes private
studies with Charles Banacos in jazz theory and improvisation, private
classical studies with Bach specialist, Dr. Peter Gach, and studies at
San Diego State University,CA. He has performed and/or recorded with the
Charles McPherson Quartet, the Lou Donaldson Quartet, Dr. Lyn Christie
Trio, The Nelson Riddle Orchestra, comedian Steve Allen, The Drifters,
Jim Cammack, Matt Schulman, Kim Plainfield, Buddy Wiliams, Emedin
Rivera, Bill Bickford, Lou Volpe, Wayne Johnson, Hank Easton, and
Brandon Fields. Recordings include Gerard Diacari’s “Cool Bop Phonics,”
Lou Volpe’s “Can You Hear That,” Hank Easton’s “San Diego Sunset,” and
Alan’s current original project “Pyramids.”
RAY FITZGERALD –
trombone, baritone horn: Ray Fitzgerald studied at the Hartt
School of Music from 1977 -1981with John Swallow, Jackie McLean and Paul
Jeffries. He has toured with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra with Buddy
Morrow, the Artie Shaw Orchestra with Dick Johnson, and the Xavier Cugat/Sonny
Costanza Orchestra. He performed during the world tour of “A Chorus
Line” including the Europe and Scandinavian tours. He has worked on the
following Broadway shows: “Crazy 4 U”, “A Funny Thing Happened On The
Way To The Forum”, “A Class Act”, “Titanic”, “Nine”, “A Christmas Carol”
at Madison Square Garden, “Kiss Me Kate”. He also plays with the Noroton
Brass Quintet and the Brass Apple Ensemble. Ray is currently subbing on
“42nd Street”, “Thoroughly Modern Millie”, “Assassins” and “Gypsy”.
KEITH GANZ – guitar: Keith
graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (wining
the music department’s Best Soloist Award. He has been performing and
teaching guitar professionally ever since. He is a regular performer at
New York’s most esteemed jazz venues including The Blue Note, Birdland,
Sweet Rhythm, and Cornelia St. Café. Keith’s guitar playing,
compositions and arrangements are featured on recent recordings by such
diverse artists as Kate McGarry, Sean Smith, The Leif Arntzen Band and
Vanessa Trouble, as well as on his own solo acoustic guitar CD, “Music
for People”. Keith teaches all styles of guitar in a very personal
manner, inviting each student to experience his or her own innate
musicality, and providing information and techniques which specifically
nurture and cultivate that musicality. Keith grew up in North Carolina
and likes to play tennis.
MARK
N. GRANT- piano: Mark is a pianist, organist, composer, and writer. He
has
composed opera and musical theater, chamber music, orchestral music and
song cycles
that have been performed in the United State and Europe and broadcast on
"The
American Century" on WQXR-FM m New York City. He is the author of "Maestros
of
the Pen: A History of Classical Music Criticism in America. " A
second book tentatively
entitled. The Rise and Fall of the Broadway Musical: How an American
Icon was Lost
will be published in 2004. Mark has guest lectured at the Eastman
School and the
JuiMiard School on piano history and Percy Grainger, and has been a
consultant to a PBS
documentary on the Van Cliburn piano competition.
LEE
GREENE - saxophone, flute, clarinet: SUNY Music major,
education minor; full time musician, arranger and composer. Lee has
performed with the
Buddy Rich Band, Frank Sinatra, Illinois Jacquet, Frank Foster and Joe
Newman.
He has backed up The Four Tops, The Drifters, Teresa Brewer, Dianne
Carroll, Frankie
Valli and Frankie Lane. Awards received: Student of Honorable Mention,
Magna Cum
Laude. He is a certified New York City Substitute teacher and is
associated with the
United Nations School for saxophone, flute and clarinet
instruction-private and group.
JANET GRICE – bassoonist:
performs jazz, classical and Brazilian music. A graduate of the New
England Conservatory of Music (BM Bassoon Performance) and New York
University (MM Jazz Composition), Janet was a recipient of a Fulbright
Fellowship in Brazil and grants from the National Endowment for the
Arts. She will soon complete doctoral studies in bassoon performance at
Rutgers University, where she teaches Fundamentals of Musicianship.
Janet toured and recorded with Karl Berger and Butch Morris, and also
worked with Leroy Jenkins, Julius Hemphill, Nana Vasconcelos, and Don
Cherry. Her three CDs feature original and Brazilian jazz, and she has
performed this music in South America, Europe, and the USA. Her groups
have performed for the NARAS Foundation, Music Performance Trust Funds,
the 92nd St. Y, and numerous libraries and arts centers with grants from
Meet the Composer, Arts International and Arts Alive. Janet plays in the
Chappaqua Orchestra and with several woodwind quintets. She performed
the music of Xenakis with the STX Ensemble in Portugal and France, and
played with Anthony Davis, Paulo Moura, the Mingus Orchestra, the
Villa-Lobos Society, Festival of Microtonal Music, Musician’s Accord,
and the Crosstown Ensemble; she has recorded for Music Minus One,
National Public Radio, film and TV. She is a bassoon teacher at the
Hackley School and a teaching artist for the Lincoln Center Institute,
and has led workshops for Carnegie Hall, The NYC Board of Education,
Arts Horizons, the Artist-Teacher Institute of NJ, Westchester Arts
Council and NJPAC.
TONY JEFFERSON - drums: Tony attended the Berklee College of Music
on
scholarship in 1984. He placed third in the Thelonious Monk
International Drum
Competition. He has performed and recorded with many jazz artists
including: Kenny
Drew, Jr., Frank Wess, Eddie Harris, Don Friedman, Cyrus Chestnut, Mark
Whitfield,
Jerry Bergonzi, Joey Calderazzo, Jack Wilkins, Freddie Cole and others.
He has
appeared at jazz festivals around the world and is an active player on
the New York
scene. He has been a guest clinician in high school and college
workshops and has taught
Master classes nationally and abroad.
MARK JOSEFSBERG – vibraphone/Alexander technique: Mark has
performed extensively throughout the United States and abroad. Some of
the New York
clubs include The Bottom Line. Sweet Basil, Birdland, the Knitting
Factory, as well as
Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center; a featured
performer in the
following Jazz Festivals: Dewars, Greenwich Village, Newport, Panasonic,
Texaco,
Montreux in Switzerland, the Patras Festival in Greece, and Teatro Verdi
in Florence,
Italy. He has performed and/or recorded with Don Cherry, Walter Perkins,
Joe Lovano,
Chip Jackson, Dave Douglas, Chris Potter, Sal Salvador, Bucky & John
Pizzarelli, Frank
Wess, Terry Clarke, Gene Bertoncini, Billy Mitchell and Reggie Workman.
He teaches
the Alexander Technique and has studied with some of the most
experienced teachers in
the United States and England.
STEVE LAMATTINA – guitar, beginning piano: Steve began playing
guitar in 1963. He studied basic guitar skills with Bob Schilingo from
1968 – 1972. In 1973 he began studies with guitar legend Barry Galbraith
and participated in Barry’s guitar workshop from 1975 to 1980. He has
performed in many jazz venues throughout the tri-state area. He is a
sought after accompanist for trumpet players Don Hahn and Bob Arthurs
and for saxophonists Carmen Leggio and Ted Brown. Steve is on the
faculty of the Music Conservatory of Westchester and he is also the
Associate Director at the Briarcliff Music School.
KATE McGARRY – voice: One of 10
children, Kate grew up in Hyannis, Massachusetts as part of a musical
family. She attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where
she studied with Dr. Horace Boyer and renowned avant-garde saxophonist
Archie Shepp. She received her BA in African American Music and Jazz.
After graduating she toured with the Boston vocal ensemble, “One O’Clock
Jump”. As a soloist, McGarry appeared at the Monterey Jazz Festival with
Clark Terry and the Hank Jones All Star Quartet. Kate relocated to Los
Angeles where she performed in jazz rooms such as Catalina’s and the
Jazz Bakery. Her first recording was well received by critics and
audiences alike. After studying for over two years at the Siddha
Meditation Ashram leading music courses, she moved to New York City in
1999. Her second CD, “Show Me” was released by Palmetto Records in July,
2003 and went to #15 on the Jazz Week charts. Her newest recording,
“Mercy Streets” will be released in March, 2005. Her group includes
husband Keith Ganz on acoustic guitars, Steve Cardenas – electric
guitars, Sean Smith – bass, Kenny Wollesen on percussion and Fred Hersch
on piano performing a collection of stellar tracks that feature the
intimate soundscapes of her arrangements.
KIM MEADE – flute: Kim received her Masters in Music Education
from the Crane School of Music and her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music
Education from the State University of New York at Fredonia.
Specializing in woodwinds, Kim also is a certified New York State School
Music Association (NYSSMA) Adjudicator and served a two-year term as All
County Band Coordinator on the Executive Board of the Westchester County
School Association. Over the past six years, Kim has taught instrumental
music, jazz ensemble and chamber music at A.M.D. Middle School in
Ossining. She also maintains a small private flute studio for students
of all levels and has coached student-based flute ensembles. Many of her
students have participated in the New York Philharmonic Musical
Encounters Program (featuring James Galway), Julliard Pre-College
auditions, New York State Band Directors’ MS Honor Band (with guest
conductor/composer Michael Sweeney), Interlochen Arts Camp, Westchester
Summer Music Center, Westchester Youth Jazz Ensemble, Westchester Jazz
Workshop Improvisation Sessions and WCSMA All-County Music events. Kim
aims to offer student-focused programs that enrich and strengthen, and
lends her willingness and experience to create, enhance and support
those efforts. While love of music has fueled her career path, love of
education drives her ambition to be involved at a grass roots level in
expanding each student’s experience.
REGINA MOLINELLI -
piano and voice: Regina is
a graduate of the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music at the Catholic
University of America, Washington, DC and Manhattanville, in Purchase.
She taught Chorus and Music in the Bronx, Bedford and Ossining during
which she prepared vocal and piano students for NYSSMA solo, ensemble
and Major Organizations festivals. Mrs. Molinelli studied voice with
Maureen Codelka and has performed solo and in chorus with the
Manhattanville Chorus and Women’s Glee Club, the Papal Choir, St.
Augustine’s choir and the Catholic University of America Chorus
including performances at the Kennedy Center in Washington. She was the
accompanist for the Children’s Opera Company of Ossining for five years
and has studied piano with Camille Budarz, Marilyn Neeley, and the late
Marie Kinyon. Currently, Regina is a cantor at St. Theresa Church in
Briarcliff Manor and a full-time Mom. She also studies piano with
Briarcliff Music faculty member, Mark Grant.
PETER PIACQUADIO - trumpet, composer, arranger and orchestrator:
Peter teaches instrumental music (band and jazz) at the Claremont
School, and fourth and fifth grade in Ossining. He has a MS and BA from
Manhattan School of Music in Trumpet Performance and Music Education and
a MFA from SUNY Purchase in Composition. Other teaching experience
includes The Hackley School, Nyack High School, Solomon Schechter
School, Concordia College, Greenburgh District 6 and Yonkers Schools.
His professional experience includes performances with Mel Torme, Sammy
Davis, Jr., Pearl Bailey, Joel Gray, Liberace, Vic Damone, Frankie Valli,
Jay and the Americans, Doc Severinson and The Tonight Show Band, Liza
Minelli, and the 1996 visit of Pope John. He was a featured soloist with
Channel 13’s American Playhouse and is the featured soloist on six
re-released Music Minus One CD’s. He orchestrated and performed on the
Clio Award winning commercials for The Metropolitan Opera featuring Bob
Hope and Luciano Pavoratti. He has also arranged or orchestrated music
for The Big Apple Minute, Chrysler Corporation, David Susskind,
McGraw-Hill, Johnson & Johnson, Fiat, and American Airlines. His
commissioned works as composer include Concerto for Trumpet and Jazz
Ensemble performed internationally by trumpeter Laurie Frink and Pavana
and Rondo for French Hornist Julie Landsman (Solo French Horn, Woodwind
Quartet and String Quartet). Peter’s Broadway experience as a trumpeter
includes “Apple Tree”, “Dancin’”, “Can Can”, “Jesus Christ Superstar”,
“Joseph and His Amazing Technicolored Dream Coat”, “They’re Playing Our
Song”, “El Bravo”, and “Doonesbury”. He is a member of WCSMA, NYSSMA,
MENC, The International Trumpet Guild and the BMI Jazz composers
Workshop. He is co-founder of the WCSMA High School Jazz Festival along
with trumpeter Rob Freeberg. Peter performs regularly with his own Brass
Quartet and Jazz Sextet.
PETER REIT – French horn:
Peter is currently in his eighteenth year with the Broadway hit “The
Phantom of the Opera.” He plays principal horn with the Westchester
Philharmonic and Greenwich Symphony Orchestras and associate principal
with the Stamford Symphony Orchestra. He is a guitarist in many top
level ensembles including the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, New York
Philharmonic, Orpheus Chamber Ensemble, Orchestra of St. Lukes, American
Symphony Orchestra and the New York City Opera Orchestra. He performs
recitals in the New England area with his wife, harpist Alyssa Reit.
They also work together performing special shows in schools through the
Westchester Philharmonic outreach program. He is active in the recording
field and can be heard on radio and television commercials, as well as
on numerous CDs. In addition to Briarcliff Music, Peter is currently on
the staff at the Hart School of Music.
GERARD REUTER – oboist/conductor: A recipient of the prestigious Pro
Musicis International Award, oboist Gerard Reuter has enjoyed a
distinguished solo career touring the United States, Europe, India and
Africa. Much sought after as a guest at summer music festivals,
including Caramoor, Marlboro, La Jolla, Round Top and the Chamber Music
Festival of the Library of Congress in the United States, and the
Flanders Festival, the Dartington Festival and the International
Musicians Seminar at Prussia Cove in Europe. He has also appeared as
soloist with orchestras throughout the United States, including the
Jupiter Symphony and Philharmonia Virtuosi in New York, the National
Chamber Orchestra in Washington, DC, the Soviet Émigré Orchestra and the
Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, of which he was a founding member. As a
chamber musician, he is a member of the Dorian Wind Quintet and was a
founding member of the ensemble, An die Musik. He has performed as a
guest with the Colorado String Quartet, Composers String Quartet,
DaVinci Quartet, Aspen Wind Quintet, American Chamber Players, New York
Philomusica and I Fiamminghi in Belgium. Mr. Reuter studied oboe at the
Julliard School with Lois Wann and at the Royal College of Music in
London and, conducting with Jens Nygaard and John Nelson. He is on the
faculties of New York University and Sarah Lawrence College.
STEVE ROANE – bass
violin, electric bass: Steve is a composer and performer. He has
written more than 100 songs, released nine albums with his own music
with various jazz ensembles, woodwind and string quartets, several with
Briarcliff music faculty Steve LaMattina and John Sergenian. He has also
written works for modern dance. He has toured the United States, Europe
and Japan; performed at Carnegie Hall, and Town Hall. He has recorded or
performed with Diane Schur, Richard Shindell, Sir Roland Hanna and Eddie
Bert. He has lectured at the Berklee School and the Philadelphia Museum
of Art. He is also on the faculty of the Music Conservatory of
Westchester, and the Cider Mill Music Conservatory in Connecticut. In a
New York Times review of Roane’s CD, Wind in the Wood, John Wilson
stated that “…Roane creates pastel moods as a polished, virtuosic
soloist, making excellent use of the melodic and harmonic potentials of
the bass.”
LYNDA GRACE ROGAL – piano: Lynda received her Bachelor of Arts in
English and Music from Trenton State College. She is an experienced
piano instructor, specializing in the instruction of young children
using Suzuki methodology, encompassing private and group lessons. Ms.
Rogal has also studied music pedagogy and fine arts at both Worcester
College in England, and has a Master of Education from Kean College in
New Jersey. Ms. Rogal has worked extensively in the music programs of
several pre-schools and elementary schools, serving as both an
instructor and musical director. Linda is currently on the faculty at
the Crestwood Music Center in Eastchester.
STEFYNIE
ROSENFELD - Stefynie has been a devoted piano/theory teacher for
over 15 years, offering both private and group instruction. She has
extensive performance experience playing jazz, classical, pop and rock.
She has worked as music director/musician in adult and children’s
musical theatre. As a composer, Stefynie has written music for film,
jingles, and dance. As a songwriter/lyricist, she has released 2 CD’s,
both receiving radio airplay in the US, Canada and on the web.
Stefynie is attending SUNY Purchase for her MM Degree in Studio
Composition. She has a Professional Music Diploma from Berklee College
of Music, and has studied with such notables as Dave Frank, Jim
MeElwaine, Allyson Bellink, Ralph Lalama and Joanne Brakeen.
MEGHAN RYAN – violin, viola:
Megan is currently the Orchestra Director at the Anne M. Dorner Middle
School in Ossining, NY. She received her B.M. in Viola Performance from
the College of Fine Arts at Boston University where she studied with
Steven Ansell and Michelle LaCourse. Continuing her studies with
Michelle LaCourse, Ms. Ryan received an M.M. degree from the University
of Massachusetts-Amherst. Outside of teaching in the public schools, Ms.
Ryan also maintains a private studio of violin and viola students. Her
orchestral experience has involved many community orchestras including
the Yonkers Philharmonic Orchestra. As a chamber musician Ms. Ryan has
participated in concerts as well as summer festivals such as Musicorda
in South Hadley, MA. In addition to the viola Ms. Ryan also studies jazz
bass with Stephen Roane. Megan is currently the Orchestra

JOHN
SERGENIAN - saxophone, clarinet, flute, jazz improvisation; Director,
Briarcliff Music & Related Arts:
Boston
University: B.S., New York University: M.A., New School for Social
Research, Graduate Faculty (Department of Anthropology).
John began teaching saxophone at the age
of sixteen. He played with Jaki Byard’s big band for three years in the
late 1950’s while attending Boston University and with bassist Buell
Neidlinger, pianists Rudy Black, Mark Levine and Myron Schwartzman among
others. In the early 1960’s, John set aside his musical ambitions to do
further graduate work and to teach anthropology and history in public
schools. He continued playing and teaching music part-time until he
retired from the Byram Hills Schools in 1993. He then returned to his
saxophone and flute to perform and to teach music full time. He opened
Briarcliff Music & Related Arts and The Yoga Center in April of 2002.
John has studied with Frank Foster, Fred Haas, Rudy Black, and flutist
Ali Ryerson.
SEAN
SMITH - bassist, composer & teacher: Sean Smith has been part of
the international jazz scene for more that 17 years. He has appeared in
many of the major
jazz rooms and concert halls all over the world. He has toured
extensively in North and
South America, throughout Europe and the Mediterranean, as far away as
Russia, Turkey,
Morocco, and Japan. In
addition to leading his own quartet. Sean has been a member of the Jacky Terrasson
Trio since 2000. His work with Jacky Terrasson and Emmanuel Pahud on the
EMI/Blue
Note recording, Into the Blue, was recently nominated for
a 2003 Grammy Award. Sean
has performed with many jazz superstars including Gerry Mulligan, Phil
Woods, Benny
Carter, Flip Phillips, Clark Terry, Lee Konitz, Art Farmer, and Tom
Harreli. He has also
been the accompanist of choice for such world-renowned vocalists as
Peggy Lee,
Rosemary Clooney, Mark Murphy, and Jimmy Scott.
Sean is a prolific composer whose
works have been played and recorded by such artists
as Phil Woods, Mark Murphy, Bill Charlap, Gene Bertoncini, Bill Mays and
Leon Parker.
His Song For The Geese was recorded by Mark Murphy as the title track of
Murphy's
RCA/BMG release, which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1998.
A Manhattan School of Music graduate. Sean has taught privately for more
than 17 years
and is currently teaching at City College in Manhattan. Sean has also
taught for the
Carnegie Hall Corporation jazz program in the New York City public
school system and
has given concerts and workshops in public schools in the tri-state
area. He has
participated in master classes and workshops all over the world
including those in New
York City's New School University, NYU, Manhattan School of Music, City
College,
William Paterson University, the Discovery Program for children at the
Jazz Standard,
and Seminario Internacional, an international jazz seminar in Vila-Real,
Spain. Sean's first
recording, Sean Smith Quartet Live! (on Chiaroscuro), featured some of
his
compositions and was received with outstanding reviews. Sean's most
recent recording,
Poise (on Ambient), features new compositions performed by his working
quartet. Sean
is based in New York.
CAROLINE TAYLOR – drums:
From 1996 – 1999, Caroline worked as a staff teacher with the
Walthamstow Education Center in London, England, providing specialized
services to the city’s public school system teaching children between
the ages of 7 and 16 percussion and general music; reading music,
playing various percussion instruments including the drum kit and tuned
percussion, notating music, improvising and playing in ensemble
situations. Caroline also has experience teaching partially sighted
children and children with severe learning difficulties. She was a
substitute teacher for Clifford Jarvis in Hackney College, Hackney,
London. She released her debut CD, “For the Moment”- The Caroline Taylor
Quintet to very favorable reviews in The London Times, The Observer, The
Independent and The Evening Standard. All music composed and arranged by
Caroline. She has performed as a drummer in various groups (Kit
McClure’s big band, Heather Bennet Trio, etc., at the Jazz Standard,
Small’s, and Cleopatra’s Needle. Caroline is the head teacher at the
YMCA after school childcare program in Somers and is a private teacher,
educating percussion students on kit, reading music, musicianship,
rudiments and transcribing.
JEFF TILLMAN - GUITAR: Jeff has been
an expert performer of American music
since childhood. His devotion to the guitar has led to a performance
career which began
at age thirteen and is now in its fourth decade. Years of honing a
performance style
based on a fascination with the jazz and classical styles of guitar
playing has led New
York contractors to request his presence at performances for clients
such as Princess
Grace of Monaco, Malcolm and Steve Forbes aboard the yacht Highlander
with their
guests: the Reagans, actor Anthony Quinn, Walter Conkrite and others. He
entertained
President Clinton aboard the USS Intrepid; birthday parties for Barbara
Walters, Jason
Robards, Benny Goodman; parties at Lincoln Center accompanying Tony
Bennett and
sharing the stage with Wynton Marsahs; and countless times at the
Rainbow Room. His
recent solo guitar CD, "Independence", was reviewed by syndicated
columnist Gary
Stevens and performances at the Rhiga Royal were highlighted in Cabaret
scenes
magazine.
JOYCE TOTH - trumpet: Joyce has played for
Broadway shows including “Cats”, “Les Miserables”, “Annie Get Your Gun”,
“Gypsy”, and “Wonderful Town”, and with the big bands of Jimmy Dorsey,
Ed Palermo, Kit McClure and Diva. She has also performed with The
Temptations, The Four Tops, Martha Reeves, Frankie Valli and Robert
Palmer. Ms. Toth has performed and recorded with Louis Ramirez, Retumba,
Adventures in Jazz, and the Sweet Potata Blues Band, among others. She
also performed on a recording with the Tom Pierson Orchestra, “tPo”,
which was featured in a Smithsonian Institute collection of the greatest
moments in jazz. Her television appearances include “The Joan Rivers
Show” and “Guiding Light”; She has traveled all over the world on tours
with Broadway shows and groups of every kind, including performances at
jazz festivals of Ottawa, Pori and Perugia. Ms. Toth is also the music
director and leader of “Brass Extravaganza” and “Pink Cadillac”, and has
arranged music for the Drifters, the Coasters, and the Platters. A
graduate of Yale University and Manhattan School of Music, she is
currently performing as a free-lance artist in the New York City area.
She is currently on the private teaching staff of Rye Country Day
School, Riverdale Country Day School, and Briarcliff Music & Related
Arts.
BORIS
TSEITLINE - violin, viola:
Boris graduated from the Leningrad Conservatory of Music, the
Novosibirsk MiGlinka State Conservatory and the Petrozavodsk branch of
the Leningrad N. Rimsky-Koraskov State Conservatory where he became
qualified as a concert performer, orchestra soloist, music instructor
and ensemble player. He was the winner of the prestigious Laureat String
Quartet All-Russia competition award in 1972. While in Russia, Mr.
Tseitline was Professor of Viola and Violin at the Leningrad Symphony
and was Concert Master and principal violist for the Musical Theatre
Conservatory in Leningrad, Russia. He performed with Michel Legrand on
his ABBA tour and appeared frequently on Russian cinema and television.
Mr. Tseitline is a highly sought after freelance violist who has
performed wit various theatre companies performing light operettas,
musical comedies, and operas. He has performed with a number of chamber
ensembles and string quartets in the New York area.
